Quentin's Story: My first job - in the 80's
That determination and having a vision do pay off in many ways
After leaving school, which was not a fantastic environment for me at the time, I looked for an apprenticeship as a chef, and couldn’t find anything. After about a year, I found a job in a service deli of a supermarket with Target (when they had supermarkets) and was there for 3 years. I started with maintaining the sausages and sliced meats section, and then eventually was promoted to the seafood section, and was taught how to fillet and gut fish, and also catch eels – not my finest moments, but something that helped me to go outside my comfort zone. One of the best aspects of this job was the camaraderie or mateship with fellow employees and a couple who I still keep in contact with today. It was in 1980-83 and was well before the days of mobile phones and the internet, so social interaction was much different, simpler and possibly better.
